Bufo

The Sonoran Desert Toad

Bufo at Paojilhuasca

A fast, powerful 5-MeO-DMT experience – vaporised from the dried secretion of the toad and held in ceremony here.

What is Bufo?

The Secretion of the Toad

Bufo refers to the dried secretion of the Sonoran Desert toad (Incilius alvarius, also called Bufo alvarius), which contains 5-MeO-DMT, a fast-acting psychoactive tryptamine, along with bufotenin. Although the toad is native to the Sonoran Desert of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the practice of smoking its secretion is a modern one and not an established Indigenous tradition.

In Ceremony

Seconds In, Deep Within

In ceremonies today, the dried secretion is vaporised and inhaled, and the effects arrive within seconds and usually last 15 to 30 minutes. People commonly describe an intense dissolving of the sense of self, a “rebirth”-style experience, overwhelming emotion, a feeling of unity or boundlessness, and little of the visual imagery associated with ayahuasca. Afterward, many report feeling calm, open, or emotionally lighter, and some use it for self-exploration and integration. Research is early, with small studies pointing to possible benefits for mood and wellbeing, but findings are preliminary. Due to the physiological and psychological effects of bufo, guests must have passed our thorough medical screening prior to receiving.
